Procrastination! It always gets the better of me. When I started on this idea about my business as a content writer, consultant, and freelancer, I had a plan to blog weekly or bi-weekly. But I have an issue with procrastinating when I am overwhelmed.
A Good Overwhelming Feeling?
Yes, I have been overwhelmed, but in a good way. Since January 2021, I dove into all the forums, training sessions, websites, and Twitter convos I could find about content writing, copywriting, freelancing, and being a small business owner. My goal was to fast-track my entrepreneurial roadmap and gather all the knowledge to be a successful writer. Then I came across SEO and took a side trip into that world. I then shifted my original business intent to include search engine optimized content and building websites for small businesses and nonprofits.
So I had this new business I was tending to, but I also needed to leave ample time and attention for my kids while continuing to excel in my 9-5 job. Setting priorities and balancing time were and continue to be essential practice, so I can do all the things I want to do that make me happy. I continue to be challenged, experimenting with playing Tetris with my time.
The Good
I helped get one of my very dear friend’s social media up and running for her business. I joined a local women’s networking group, attended a mastermind group for a period, met several fabulous women who genuinely cared about my success and the importance of the services I offer. They opened the doors to get me started with client referrals. Never underestimate networking. Whether you do it online or locally, networking is key. At least it has been for me without a doubt.
I have now had several clients work with me from the group alone over the past nine months. In between, I have also been hiking and cycling on weekends with my family, enjoying my myriad of hobbies, catching up with friends, and sometimes I sit around and do absolutely nothing at all. I also continue to fuel my career growth in technology for my 9-5, completing my deliverables and learning new tools to apply for future projects.
So with all that, my blog frequency has been…well…not very frequent, barely existent.
My old way of thinking, my list of things that I do are excuses. My new way of thinking I am prioritizing. Procrastination can be good.
I ultimately decide what activities and tasks are important and the impact it has on me.
What’s next for my blogging?
Being significantly behind on blogging, no doubt, has been frustrating and this looming thing I have over myself. But I finally realized not too long ago that it is ok to be kind to myself, as it has all been for a good reason. I’ve been spending time with my family, working, meeting new people, continuing my hobbies, and completing important projects for my customers and their business. So I will forgive myself and adjust.
Perhaps my blog posting should be once a month or whenever it feels right to me. And this is all to say that if you are a small business owner and you find you can’t get everything done, I am here to say procrastination is not always a bad thing.
It is ok.
Everything will work out.
Prioritize and do what you feel is the best use of your time.
You are doing a fantastic job. Keep up the excellent work.
