1. Check if Your Site Is Indexed by Google
If Google can’t find your website, your customers won’t either.
Try This
Go to Google and type in the search bar or field
site:yourwebsiteURL.com
What you see in the results tells you a lot:
- No Results: Your site may not be indexed yet.
- Only a few pages: You may have technical or content issues.
- Strange or outdated pages: Time for content cleanup.
This one search gives you a snapshot of what Google Currently knows about you.
2. Review Your Page Titles and Descriptions
Your page title (the blue link) and the short description below it are often the first impression someone gets of your business.
Ask yourself:
- Does the title clearly say who you are and what you do?
- Does the description accurately reflect your services?
- Would a potential customer understand your value from this snippet alone?
If not, it’s time to refine your on-page SEO.
3. See If You're Findable by Name, Keywords, and Location
Open an incognito window and search for:
- Your business name
- Your personal name
- Your service + your city (ex. orthodontist San Rafael)
These should be separate searches with different variances of your service keywords to see how your site and web pages are performing.
Look at the results:
- Are you on page 1, 2-3, or buried deeper?
- Do the listings make sense?
- Does Google seem to understand what you offer?
This step helps you see your business the way your customer would.
4. Check for Consistency Across the Web
Google loves consistency and so do your customers. Search your business name again and look at:
- Online directories
- Social media profiles
- Old listings
- Anywhere your business appears
Make sue your name, address, phone number, email and website match everywhere. Inconsistent information can confuse both people and search engines.
5. Test Your Site on on Mobile
More than half of website traffic comes from mobile devices for most websites. If your site isn’t mobile friendly, you could risk losing customers.
Quick test:
- Open your site in Chrome
- Right-click then choose Inspect from the menu
- Toggle through the different device sizes (iphone, Pixel, iPad, etc.)
Check for:
- Text that’s too small
- Buttons that are hard to tap
- Layouts that break
- Images that don’t resize
A smooth mobile experience is essential for both SEO and user trust.
Side note: Be sure your website is integrated with Google Analytics and Google Search Console. You can gain a lot of information from site metrics, including whether your customers are more inclined to use mobile vs desktop.
